Trophy Trout Fishing with Gustavo Olsen
Patagonia is famous for trophy trout and Estancia San Huberto
has one of the most famous “dry fly” rivers in the world on
the property of Carmen and Carlos Olsen. The Malleo River has
its headwaters at Lago Tromen and then flows directly through
the Olsen Property.
 The
Olsen Property, Estancia San Huberto, contains approximately
23 miles of the Malleo River that is only accessible through
the Olsen’s lodge. Several “Spring Creeks” feed into the river
and these creeks offer excellent dry fly fishing as well. The
variety of types of water assures that there is something for
every angler, from deep pools, riffles, flat water to swift
rapids.The Olsen’s have been hosting fly-fishing groups for
the past 35 years at San Huberto. Your top Guides, Gustavo
and Ronnie Olsen, grew up on the river and know where the
trout feed so that anglers have the best chance of catching
numbers of trophy trout. Anglers of Estancia San Huberto
commonly release 20 –40 trophy trout per day. Rainbow and
Brown trout in the Malleo average in the 16-22 inch range with
24 – 27 inch trout taken regularly. The largest was taken in
January 2001 and was a 30.5-inch Brown trout taken on a 5
weight rod and a size 12 “Royal Wulff”.
The Olsens employ several handpicked guides that are as
experienced as Ronnie and Gustavo and the experience of these
guides assures that clients will have the best opportunity at
catching the trophy trout in the Malleo River. Clients of
Estancia San Huberto will also have the opportunity to fish
Lago Tromen, a beautiful deep-water mountain lake that feeds
the Malleo River. The lake is located in a National Park high
up in the Andes just north of Estancia San Huberto. The guides
at Estancia San Huberto will be your guides on the lake or you
may elect to split your trip between San Huberto and Refugio
Lago Tromen so you can maximize fishing time at both
locations. The accommodations at the lake are very nice and
the view from the dining room and back porch of the lake at
sunset are breath taking. Lago Tromen offers great dry fly
fishing for monster trout during the summer, as well as
fantastic streamer action with sinking lines. Anglers on the
lake commonly release 30-40 trout a day in the 20-24 inch
range. Anglers regularly release trout larger than 26 inches.
The lake contains brown, brook and rainbow trout, which
enthusiastically take dry flies and/or streamers. |

chance to fish Argentina’s other famous rivers such as the
Traful, Chimehuin, and the Collon Cura. You and your guide
will travel to the other rivers you have chosen to fish and
stay at the lodges on these rivers so as to maximize fishing
